Project Overview

Philadelphia photography studio Philip Gabriel Photography came to Blinebury Design with a challenge that faces many photo studios: Create a website that features various types of photography for a wide range of potential clients, and do it seamlessly.

Studio owner (and fellow Tyler School of Art ’04 alum) Gabe Fredericks hired Blinebury Design to create a new look to compliment his spectacular images that range from wedding photography and portraiture to food and lifestyle photography. The result is a highly functional website with three unique portals for visitors to choose their interests without being distracted by other photography types.

Fully Responsive, Fully Customized

There are a lot of template sites out there and plenty that cater specifically to photographers. From Gabe’s own words on the project, “We were in need of a new state-of-the-art and custom website. We wanted something unique, a site that didn’t look like any other.” A custom website like the one designed and developed for Philip Gabriel Photography is completely unique, down to the smallest detail.

Custom Image Gallery

A key element to the project was the development of a custom gallery system that could present hundreds of images in an effortless slideshow and work the same from desktop to mobile. We chose a thumbnail-style slideshow for the individual image galleries to present an overview of the entire wedding or gallery of images. While there are highlight slideshows for each main section, the story is really told in individual image galleries in which a user can get an immediate glance of all images.

Beautiful Blog

No photography website would be complete without a gorgeous blog to accompany the primary image galleries. Hundreds of stories are told by the team at Philip Gabriel Photography. They love to offer details on the incredible events they capture, and the wonderful couples and families they encounter in their journey. The photography blog showcases the most recent post with an extra wide image feature to grab the attention of potential clients.

Drexelbrook

Project Overview

Drexelbrook specializes in making “the most important day in your life” memorable, so their new website needed to be a memorable mix of design and functionality.

Designing with The Bride in Mind

According to a recent study by The Knot and Pinterest, “Forty percent [of brides-to-be] spend two to four hours per week looking at images online for wedding inspiration, while 36 percent spend five to 10 hours per week looking at wedding photos online.”

For the Drexelbrook website design, we payed close attention to how media would be used on every page and made a conscious choice to allow the photographs to do the talking, taking up a large chunk of webpage real estate. We aimed to combine the modern trend of a sleek, “flat design” website with a sense of elegance and classic charm, all while functioning seamlessly across all screen sizes and device types.

Content Strategy:

The previous Drexelbrook website was made up of hundreds of pages and utilized a small, unclear navigation. With the new design, we wanted to focus on the four primary areas of their business: Weddings, corporate events, parties, and off-site catering. Drexelbrook offers wedding services for its on-site location and a multitude of venues throughout the Tri-State area, so organizing the content and making sure users ended up in the right portal was paramount.

Blinebury Design provides content strategy services and site map development in addition to the traditional design and coding you’d expect from a web design studio.

Why Media Matters:

When we first met with Drexelbrook to discuss the scope of the project, one thing was clear: The design was going to be media-rich. We needed big, beautiful photographs and we needed a lot of them! Great photography is so important. Can I say that again? Great photography… OK, you get it. Your audience is savvy and they browse the web all day, every day. They want to see the goods.

If you don’t have good photography, get it. Blinebury Design can help—we work with a few select photographers with different styles who can craft your website content. In addition to our design and development work, we also work with clients on content strategy and implementation, and can lead the art direction for photography and video shoots to ensure that your new media is as customized as your new website.

Our new website has grown our business at a faster pace than we thought! We received 72 inquiries in January ’14. Contrast that with 290 inquiries in January ’15 after our website relaunch.
